Where to Spend Your 67 Minutes in Somerset West: Celebrating Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrated on July 18th, honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela through acts of community service. The day encourages everyone to dedicate 67 minutes to helping others, representing the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for social justice.

Mandela Day is a powerful reminder of the impact each person can make in their community. Whether you choose to work in the garden, support local schools or help at a shelter, your contribution will honour Mandela’s legacy and strengthen the spirit of community.

In Somerset West, there are many meaningful ways to spend your 67 minutes. Here are some suggestions:

1. Village Garden

41 New St, Somerset West

Spend your time in the heart of Somerset West at the Village Garden or play your part by donating toiletries to the gardeners whom the project supports.

“Donations of soap - sunlight and body soap, facecloths, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, body lotion and disposable razors will be most welcome and may be dropped off during the week or on the day, “ says Di Irish from the Garden. “We will also be treating the gardeners to a hearty lunch at the garden on Mandela Day.”

This community garden is a thriving green space where volunteers can help with planting, weeding and harvesting. The team is passionate about creating a sustainable food source and a beautiful, serene environment for the community. On Mandela Day, your efforts in the garden will contribute directly to providing fresh produce to local families and community kitchens, fostering a sense of community and self-sufficiency. Gardening activities can range from preparing soil beds, planting seasonal vegetables and herbs, to harvesting crops that are ready to be distributed. The garden also serves as an educational space where volunteers can learn about sustainable agriculture practices and the benefits of locally grown food. By participating, you'll be helping to promote environmental stewardship and community resilience.

2. Imibala Trust Initiatives

14 Bright St, Audas Estate, Somerset West

Imibala Trust is dedicated to improving the lives of underprivileged children by providing them with essential items, such as school shoes. On Mandela Day, you can contribute by donating new or gently used shoes, or by helping to sort and distribute the collected footwear to children in need. Imibala's shoe drive aims to ensure that every child has a comfortable and dignified walk to school. Proper footwear not only improves their physical well-being but also boosts their confidence and participation in school activities. By supporting this initiative, you help create a supportive and enriching environment for students, enabling them to focus on their education without the distraction of inadequate footwear. Engaging with Imibala Trust's shoe drive not only addresses immediate needs but also inspires a culture of giving and community support among students and volunteers alike. Your involvement will make a significant difference in the lives of many children, fostering a sense of care and community responsibility.

This Mandela Day, GraySwan, through their Walking with Purpose initiative, will be donating shoes to Imibala and the gardeners of the Somerset West Village Garden.

3. HELDERBERG Animal Welfare

42 Reitz St, Audas Estate, Somerset West

The Helderberg Animal Welfare Society often needs volunteers to help care for animals. This organization is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned and neglected animals. On Mandela Day, you can spend your 67 minutes walking dogs, cleaning enclosures, or simply giving some attention to the animals. These activities not only improve the animals’ quality of life but also increase their chances of finding a permanent home.

Helderberg Animal Welfare Society relies heavily on volunteers to maintain a high standard of care for the animals, and your time can provide essential support. By helping to socialize the animals, you contribute to their emotional well-being, making them more adoptable. Additionally, your efforts in cleaning and maintaining the shelter facilities help create a healthier and more pleasant environment for both the animals and the staff.

4. Somerset West Night Shelter

71 Church St, Somerset West

Local soup kitchens and shelters, such as the Somerset West Night Shelter, are always in need of extra hands. Spend your 67 minutes serving meals, sorting donations or simply providing companionship to those in need.

The Somerset West Night Shelter offers safe, overnight accommodation and support services to the homeless. By volunteering, you can help ensure that the shelter runs smoothly and efficiently. Serving meals is a direct way to address food insecurity in the community, and your efforts in sorting donations can help organize essential supplies for distribution. Providing companionship and listening to the stories of those who use the shelter’s services can also offer emotional support and a sense of connection. Your time can make a significant difference in the lives of the less fortunate, providing them with hope and dignity. Blankets and warm clothes are in short supply during this cold snap, donations are always appreciated.

5. Beach Clean-Up

Strand Beach, Strand

Join a beach clean-up at the nearby Strand Beach, one of the most popular local beaches. Not only will you help preserve the natural beauty of Somerset West’s coastline, but you’ll also contribute to the health of the local ecosystem. Bring some friends, gloves and a trash bag, and spend your 67 minutes making a visible difference. Plastic waste and other debris are significant environmental issues affecting marine life and water quality. By participating in a beach clean-up, you help reduce pollution and protect marine wildlife. These clean-ups often involve picking up litter, sorting recyclables and sometimes even recording data on the types of waste collected. This information can be used to inform future environmental policies and community initiatives. Beach clean-ups are also a great way to meet like-minded individuals and promote environmental awareness within the community.

6. Helderberg Society for the Aged

121 Lourensford Rd, Roundhay, Somerset West

Many elderly care facilities in Somerset West appreciate volunteers who can spend time with residents. For example, Helderberg Society for the Aged welcomes volunteers to engage with their residents. Whether it’s playing games, reading, or simply having a conversation, your visit can brighten someone’s day and provide much-needed social interaction. Elderly residents often face loneliness and social isolation, and your presence can bring joy and companionship. Activities like playing board games, engaging in arts and crafts, or even just chatting over a cup of tea can make a world of difference. Volunteering at an elderly care facility also provides an opportunity to learn from the residents’ life experiences and stories. Your time and attention can help improve their mental and emotional well-being, creating a more vibrant and supportive community environment.
