Revitalising Somerset West: DEWVEST - The Vision Behind Village Collective
Nestled at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, Somerset West is celebrated for its picturesque surroundings and close-knit community. However, like many historic CBDs, it has faced challenges over the years, with a steady decline in its once-thriving centre.
Bertus de Waal, MD of the Dewvest Group and the visionary behind the Somerset West Village Collective, saw something different: potential. Dewvest, located in the heart of the Somerset West CBD, is a property investment company catering to private investors. Its ethos of abundance—a belief that business can work profitably for all stakeholders—lies at the heart of the Somerset West rejuvenation project. This ethos is further underscored by the Thuthukisa Trust (Grace in Action). With a 10% stake in Dewvest, the trust channels profits into community upliftment projects, supporting AIDS orphans, empowering disadvantaged students, and teaching street vendors commercial skills in partnership with the Paradigm Shift Group.
Why Somerset West? A Personal Connection
For Bertus, Somerset West is more than just a town—it’s home. Growing up in the area, he witnessed the CBD’s decline but also recognised its untapped promise. "The CBD has been going backward for the past 20 to 30 years," he explains. "But the infrastructure is there, the environment is beautiful, and the surrounding residential areas are affluent. The CBD just needed care and vision." Dewvest and its investors began acquiring and repositioning strategic properties, sparking a domino effect of rejuvenation that inspired fellow property and business owners. However, they quickly realised the need to communicate this transformation to the wider community.
The Birth of the Village Collective
This vision laid the foundation for the Village Collective, a non-profit initiative dedicated to revitalising Somerset West’s CBD. Key to the project’s success was assembling the right team, including Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, a seasoned marketer and former CEO of Cape Town Tourism. With founding members such as the Rola Group, Somerset West City Improvement District, and GraySwan, the Village Collective evolved into the community-driven platform it is today. "We needed a platform to invite businesses and residents to become part of the story," Bertus reflects. "People cherish stories. They want to feel part of a transformation, and the Village Collective gives them that opportunity."
A Vision for Somerset West
At its heart, the Village Collective envisions a CBD where people want to live, work, play, shop and visit. Realising this dream requires collaboration between local businesses, property owners, the municipality, and the wider community. "It’s about creating a connected space—a narrative of transformation that everyone can feel part of," Bertus emphasises.
Achievements So Far
Dewvest has already achieved significant milestones:
Alexandra Place and Alexandra House: Once-neglected buildings, now restored to their former glory. Alexandra Place, an art deco landmark, is home to tenants such as Bäckerei, The Mood Collectives, and Trek. Alexandra House retains the historic charm of the old Somerset West CBD.
The Forum Building: Its repositioning, alongside anchor tenants like Bootlegger Coffee and premium outlets such as Wyn, has revitalised this corner of Caledon Street.
Fountain Square: From an underutilized courtyard area, this complex has been transformed into a vibrant food court with popular outlets like Smokey Brisket, Ground Central, Fish & Chips Eatery, Senor Onion, Fletchers, and Giuseppe’s.
Williams Bike Shop (Giant): A dilapidated property reimagined as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts, enhancing Somerset West’s appeal to adventure seekers. These projects have inspired neighbouring businesses to follow suit, creating a ripple effect of rejuvenation.
What’s Next for Dewvest?
The next chapter focuses on the Twin Oaks building, located opposite Alexandra House. Plans include linking the Main Road and Caledon Street through a new piazza-style corridor, complete with vibrant retail and dining options. "This integration will transform how people experience the CBD, especially after hours," Bertus shares. "We’re excited about the potential tenants and opportunities this development will attract." Dewvest’s expertise in urban rejuvenation ensures that the calibre of tenants and projects will reflect the community’s aspirations.
A Call to Action: Supporting Somerset West
For the community to thrive, it requires the support of its residents and businesses. Bertus urges locals to champion the entrepreneurs who are taking risks to transform Somerset West. "It’s been hard for entrepreneurs over the past 10 years," he acknowledges. "But with community support and platforms like Village Collective, we can turn Somerset West into a thriving hub of opportunity. I look forward to a bright 10 years ahead!" For businesses, the Village Collective offers an affordable and effective way to connect with the community, market their services, and contribute to the town’s transformation.
Closing Thoughts
The story of the Village Collective is one of optimism, resilience, and collaboration. Somerset West is more than a town—it’s a community with a rich past and a promising future. Thanks to Dewvest and its growing network of partners, the CBD is on the brink of a renaissance. "This isn’t just about property; it’s about people," Bertus concludes. "Together, we can build a Somerset West that we’re all proud to call home."
