Women in Business: Insights and Inspirations

To celebrate Women’s Month, we sat down with three extraordinary women who lead successful, women-owned businesses right here in the Village…

Emma Pardoe, Managing Partner at her Chartered Accountant firm; Kim de Villiers from The Mood Collectives; and Britney Varley from Wild Eatery shared their experiences and insights on navigating the business world.

Their stories and lessons offer a wealth of inspiration and practical advice for women striving to make their mark in the business world.

The Power of Enthusiasm in the Workplace

Enthusiasm is a powerful force in the workplace, capable of transforming mundane tasks into opportunities for growth and connection. Enthusiastic individuals are more likely to actively listen to client needs, provide personalised solutions, and go the extra mile to exceed expectations. By infusing enthusiasm into client interactions, organisations can build stronger relationships, foster client loyalty, and ultimately drive business growth.

The quote, "Enthusiasm creates opportunities, and energy makes the most of them," can serve as a guiding principle. Applying this philosophy to studies, career, and practice brings opportunities, forms networks, encourages connections, and maintains focus. Enthusiasm not only inspires others but also makes visions come alive.

Britney Varley from Wild Eatery exemplifies this spirit. Reflecting on her decision to expand to Somerset West, she shared, "There seemed to be a lack of healthy plant-based food in the area at the time, and I was looking to open a second location for Wild Eatery. So when the opportunity arose to take on this unique and beautiful pod as our new cafe space in Somerset West, I jumped on it." Her enthusiasm for bringing healthy, plant-based options to the community has been a driving force behind her business' success.

Breaking Barriers: How to Navigate the Male-Dominated Corporate World

In male-dominated industries, women often encounter professionals who underestimate their knowledge and abilities. Confidence and expertise are essential in these situations. It is crucial to stand firm, assert knowledge, and take pride in one's identity as a woman. Confidence and a demonstration of expertise help in navigating challenges and breaking down stereotypes, earning respect and recognition.

Kim de Villiers from The Mood Collectives has faced and overcome such barriers. Growing up in Somerset West, she has seen the potential of her hometown. "Somerset West is my little corner of the world. I have never stopped referring to it as 'the village.' I grew up here, enjoyed the main road when it still boasted an amazing Christmas Light festival, the movie house was in Michael's Arcade, and the Circle Centre was a super exciting addition to our village. I've always believed that with the right businesses and a sprinkle of district improvements, our village can thrive once more. The Mood Collectives is absolutely buzzing to be a part of this journey and help make it happen!"

Balancing Act: Lessons on Managing Work and Life as a Woman in Business

Choosing a life partner who supports values and career aspirations is a significant decision. It is important to select someone who stands by and does not induce guilt for pursuing professional goals. Balancing work and life is a unique challenge for women in business, but it is achievable with the right support system.

Having a supportive partner and building a network of like-minded professionals who understand and share similar challenges can provide the necessary support and encouragement to thrive in both personal and professional arenas. Emma Pardoe, a Chartered Accountant and Managing Partner, stresses the importance of this balance and support network, which has been instrumental in her professional journey.

Mentorship Matters: The Impact of Female Mentors on Career Development

Female mentors play a crucial role in shaping careers, particularly in male-dominated and highly competitive industries. A mentor’s networking rules, sales strategies, and meticulous instructions can instil a strong work ethic and invaluable life lessons. Mentorship provides guidance, support, and serves as a powerful role model, inspiring and motivating individuals to succeed.

Reflecting on the lessons learned from a female mentor, even long after the mentor has passed away, underscores the lasting impact of mentorship in career development.

From Setbacks to Success: Turning Career Obstacles into Opportunities

Viewing setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow is essential. Without experiencing failure, one cannot learn or grow. Setbacks provide valuable lessons and opportunities for growth, teaching resilience and the importance of perseverance. By turning obstacles into stepping stones, career obstacles can be transformed into success.

Innovating from Within: Women Leading Change in Corporate Culture

Women are driving change within organisations to create more inclusive and innovative corporate cultures. Leading with authenticity and a commitment to excellence fosters environments that support diversity and innovation. Embracing unique qualities and values can lead to success and inspire others to do the same.

These lessons from Emma Pardoe, Kim de Villiers, and Britney Varley highlight the power of enthusiasm, confidence, balance, mentorship, resilience, and innovation in the business world. Each of them leads successful businesses: Emma at her accounting practice, Kim with The Mood Collectives, and Britney with Wild Eatery in Cape Town and Somerset West. They are all part of the Village Collective, a community that supports and uplifts women in business. Their stories serve as a testament to the incredible potential and resilience of women, encouraging others to pursue their professional dreams with passion and determination.
